Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

ABOUT University Ghent Geotechnical Institute (UGGI)

The Ghent University Geotechnical Institute (UGGI) is a collaborative and supportive research environment where teamwork and curiosity shape new solutions. We welcome international researchers into a warm and friendly atmosphere, offering strong mentoring, open exchange of ideas, and the opportunity to grow while contributing to sustainable geotechnical engineering.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The EXCALIBUR project, funded by the Energy Transition Fund of the FPS Economy (Belgium), develops strategies for monopile foundation removal using vibratory extraction and jetting, supported by experiments at multiple scales and advanced numerical modelling. By studying ageing effects on extractability and predicting mechanical responses, the project aims to establish a holistic framework that enhances the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of offshore wind turbine decommissioning across the full lifecycle from installation to removal. The project is structured into seven work packages (WPs), WP2 will leverage the controlled, well-equipped soil pit facility at UGGI to conduct medium-scale pile tests under well-defined soil conditions. The soil pit, designed for simulating a variety of subsurface conditions, offers a unique opportunity to study the behaviour of medium-scale piles in a more controlled environment compared to the large-scale field site in WP1. The facility allows for precise control over the testing conditions and provides a distinct experimental framework for validating and complementing the insights gained in WP1. The primary goal of WP2 to be performed at UGGI is to explore the behaviour of piles under different installation methods, soil conditions, and extraction techniques at a medium scale. While the test conditions are more controlled and smaller in scope than those in WP1, the findings are essential for bridging the gap between laboratory-scale and large-scale field tests.
