The doctoral project focuses on improving current design methods for sealing rock tunnels against groundwater inflow using <strong>grouting<\/strong>, a process that represents a major part of both the cost and construction time in tunnelling. Despite its importance, practical experience shows that predicting the resulting watertightness of a grouting design remains challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project aims to develop <strong>new design principles for tunnel grouting<\/strong>, contributing directly to the scientific foundation of a forthcoming <strong>European design standard<\/strong> for underground construction in rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Doctoral Project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a PhD student, you will work in close collaboration with experts in <strong>rock mechanics, grouting technology, groundwater modelling, and reliability-based design<\/strong>. Your main responsibilities will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quantifying uncertainties in grouting design using <strong>probabilistic and statistical methods<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formulating grouting design within a <strong>limit state verification framework<\/strong> and evaluating the methodology under realistic conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publishing scientific papers, expanding your expertise in soil and rock mechanics, and contributing to <strong>teaching<\/strong> at the undergraduate and master\u2019s levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this work, you will develop strong analytical and modelling skills and position yourself for a future career as a specialist in academia or industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supervision team:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Johan Spross (design principles)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fredrik Johansson (rock mechanics)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liangchao Zou (groundwater modelling)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Final decisions on supervision are made at admission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Admission Requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To be admitted to postgraduate education at KTH (Chapter 7, \u00a739 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), you must meet one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hold a second-cycle degree (e.g., master\u2019s degree), or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have completed at least 240 ECTS credits, including 60 ECTS at the second-cycle level, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possess equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A mandatory requirement is <strong>English proficiency equivalent to English B\/6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Selection Criteria<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To succeed as a doctoral student at KTH, you should be <strong>goal-oriented<\/strong>, <strong>thorough<\/strong>, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct independent academic work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaborate effectively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate a professional attitude<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyse and solve complex problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The ideal applicant has a background in <strong>geotechnical or rock engineering, groundwater modelling<\/strong>, or similarly relevant subjects (at least 60 second-cycle credits in these fields). Experience in <strong>hydrogeology, geotechnical\/rock engineering practice<\/strong>, and\/or skills in <strong>statistics, reliability-based design, and programming<\/strong> are valuable merits. Strong academic performance and excellent command of written and spoken English are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After qualification requirements, strong emphasis will be placed on <strong>personal suitability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Target degree:<\/strong> Licentiate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Employment Information<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Only applicants admitted to postgraduate education may be hired as doctoral students. Employment is full-time, initially for up to one year and renewable for a maximum of two years at a time.
